The Art of Cross Reading,
Next up!
Waits Lister's Round 2
April 8th
info coming soon.
March 25, 2013 - filled
This is one of my favorite meet-ups! Join us! Here is your chance to learn & practice the fine art of Cross Reading (Frick/Frack). This is a fun and exciting approach to getting your client's message across in a very casual, compelling and audience inclusive manner. If you have not attended our Newbie's Night, please contact me before registering.
It is much more than just words on a piece of paper. It is the opportunity to have your client's message heard. You need to be sure those words hit home. Learn to find the message behind the message, recognize the "call to action" and make the MOST of each sentence. Whether it is retail, narrative or character based, there is a preferred delivery by every copywriter.
Each attendee will have the opportunity to "think out loud" as they deconstruct their script and discuss their findings. Then, we'll hit the mic and lay it down. All recorded audio including additional direction will be delivered within days after the Meet Up. Plus 2 great hand-outs and 1 lucky attendee will win a copy of Dan Friedman's book, Sound Advice: Voice Over from an Audio Engineer's Perspective. Cool! Be sure to attend this enlightening Meet Up and I promise you will never look at a script the same way again.
If you have NOT attended a Newbie's Night yet, please email me before you register.
This meet up has filled. Future Voice Over Actors... Ready... GO! It's Newbie's Night. The Summer of 2012 has brought a slew of new members. We welcome you to test the water or jump in head first! Your DVA was thrilled and honored to have Amy Snively (rhymes with lively) guest host our Aug. 13th Meet Up to be held at the beautiful and spacious Reading and Radio Resource in Uptown Dallas!
Amy is the founder and producer of FaffCon: The voiceover unconference, now on its 5th event.
Katie Leigh is a popular and talented voiceover actress. She is beloved as Connie Kendall in world’s longest running international radio drama, Adventures in Odyssey.
Other roles she plays include Baby Rowlf in the Emmy Award-winning Muppet Babies cartoon series, Honker Muddlefoot inDarkwing Duck, Sheila in Dungeons and Dragons, Zoe in Animalia, Richie in Richie Rich, Sunni Gummi of Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Alex in Totally Spies, Han Solo for Lego Star Wars Padawan Menace, and Zuzu in theExtraordinary Adventures of Poppycat.
Katie is the only person who has given the otherwise silent Dumbo a voice in Disney’s Dumbo Circus. A little known secret is that Katie is the voice of the Maharaja in Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
With an exceptional genius for creating children, teen, and character voices, Katie can sound like a grown-up, too. She is heard on corporate and industrial training productions, documentary narrations, commercials, internet websites, and multi-media applications.
Katie is a frequent podcast and radio guest, event speaker, and featured conference speaker.
The director says they want it "natural". Sounds easy? Think again. How can you make your performance sound "natural"? If your performance sounds like you reading, you probably won't get the job. Who are you talking to? [more info]
Are you ready to get your DEMO out there? Afraid of falling for the "Store Bought Demo" syndrome? You will need a demo that REALLY represents your abilities and NOT those of a director's? You must be SURE you can reproduce the quality of reads you are offering. Contact mefor all the details and learn how to do it the right way!

The Eight Spokes
I'm asked a lot from the group, "What is the next Topic?" and "How do you choose?"
I am conducting the meet ups as a cycle, or wheel if you will. There are 8 spokes to the wheel. These spokes are:
Since the group is continually growing, I will throw in a Newbie's night in the middle of the cycle. Although the cycle can begin anywhere, I chose the order because it may seem less daunting and one blends nicely into the next. If you are a new member, I strongly recommend you begin with one of the Newbie's Nights.
Why join? For the same reason I did... to determine if it is feasible and realistic for me to get into this vocation. Steve Scott
Awesome and straight forward which is the kind of "boot in the butt" we newbies need if we are serious. Rick Keeling
Everyone is really warm and friendly. Cliff is great. Yay team! Minh Do
Cliff gave plenty of constructive criticisms, in a non-Simon Cowell way :) He was very kind, detailed, humorous, and even gave examples. It was fun watching everyone read and I really learned a lot. Amy B.
Great source of information about voice acting. Excellent course lay out & a refreshing approach to learning about the world of VO. Victor Carter
Good people, great instructor, loads of fun. There. That's this Meet-up Group in a nutshell. David
This was the most informative and interesting meet-up I have been to. I learned so much and got even more interested in VO than I was when I came. Cliff is an excellent leader and teacher and I look forward to being very active in this group. Jeanne
